To mark World Kidney Day Curwen Art near Cambridge are offering a special 15% discount on selected prints. From 8 March – 8 April their month long sale will benefit Kidney Research UK with a further donation of 15% from the proceeds of sales going directly to the charity.

Sanela Becar, a transplant patient, ran a small event at her work place. She baked some cake and kidney shaped biscuits to mark World Kidney day and collected donations in aid of The Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity. She raised £130.
At Essex County Council we are marking World Kidney Day with a display in our public reception area at County Hall promoting healthy kidneys and the work of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity and asking people to consider joining the organ donor register. The event was organised by one of our elected Councillors, whose husband had kidney disease and received two transplants, and the display is being staffed by people (Council staff and supporters) who have personal experience of kidney disease and transplantation. So far we have had lots of interest and have responded to many questions about kidneys and about organ donation.
Renal patients and kidney specialists are to join forces at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) to raise awareness of kidney disease.
They will be coming together on March 8 to mark World Kidney Day 2012.
The new hospital, which houses one of the largest renal centres in the UK, serving a catchment area of 1.7 million people, is to mount a series of display stands in its main atrium between 10:00 and 16:00. These will separately focus on the vital areas of chronic kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation, and research into kidney disease.
Manning the stands will be clinical staff from QEHB as well as members of the hospital’s Kidney Patients Association (KPA), who are renal patients.
St. George’s Hospital
Nurses, dietitians and several other members of staff will be in the Lobby of Atkinson Morley Wing in St Georges Hospital from 9am till 3pm on Thursday 8th March, promoting healthy eating, giving out dietary advice and doing blood pressure checks. We will be offering checklists for people passing by to complete and answer any questions they may have.
We will also be holding our third annual KiDD – Kidney Donor Day at 11am. This is an event we do each year on World Kidney Day to recognise and appreciate the gift of donation. All our kidney donors from 2011 have been invited to attend the event and will be presented with a certificate to acknowledge their gift of donation, they are invited to bring members of their family and recipients to attend.
We will also be hosting an information stand in the hospital entrance in the morning 9.30-12.30 doing blood pressure testing giving dietary advice and encouraging people to sign up to the organ donor register.

Donor (Paul) and Recipient (Steve) practicing on a tandem in the sleet in Merton Street, Oxford on Sunday March 4th 2012.
To celebrate World Kidney day four pairs of live kidney donors and recipients from the Oxford Transplant Centre will cycle on tandems from Westminster to Oxford (approximately 100 miles) leaving from the front of St Thomas’s Hospital opposite the Houses of Parliament at 6pm on Wednesday March 7th and due to arrive in Oxford at Corpus Christi College at 6pm on World Kidney Day Thursday March 8th. The donor-recipient pairs include 2 pairs of brothers; one mother who donated to her 23 year son and an aunt aged 65 who donated to her nephew. The combination of a kidney donor and recipient on the same tandem conjures a powerful image of the tremendous benefit of living kidney transplantation for all age groups, and the return to a completely normal lifestyle for the donor and recipient.
They will be accompanied by Dr Paul Harden (Consultant Transplant Physician in Oxford) and Dr AlehKalachyk who is the leading kidney transplant surgeon in Minsk, Belarus. This pair of international transplant clinicians will also ride a tandem from London to Oxford and represents the spirit of UK transplant centres helping to facilitate the development of transplantation in the wider world.
The Oxford and Minsk transplant Centres have had a training link since 2005. Over the last 6 years the kidney transplant rate has increased from 8 per year in 2005 to 175 during 2011. We have also jointly started a very successful kidney transplant programme for children in May 2009 with 45 transplants successfully performed since then.
