The combination of low numbers of black and minority ethnic organ donors and the higher prevalence of conditions such as diabetes and hepatitis mean that these communities are disproportionately represented on transplant lists. This results in minority ethnic patients waiting on average twice as long for some transplants as their white counterparts. The paper promotes a ‘two-pronged’ approach, tackling barriers to black and minority organ donation in the short term (such as lack of awareness or perceived religious opposition) and employing longer term preventative medical interventions which may reduce the need for organs in these communities in the future.

If you want to know about kidney transplantation take a look at this booklet, produced by the Royal Free Hospital - “Can I have a kidney transplant?” . It provides some great information for people with kidney failure considering transplantation.
The London Acute kidney Injury Network is a multidisciplinary collaboration of London healthcare professionals and organisations that manage AKI. The network includes all seven London renal units. We are working together to deliver equitable, high-quality AKI prevention and care.
At our launch event our speakers will present background talks on this condition and why we consider it a healthcare priority that requires a strategic response. We will then present the network proposal for discussion.
We are delighted that the Wellcome library have agreed to the display, at the event, of original, archive materials from Eric Bywaters landmark research on AKI during the London blitz (Bywaters and Beal, BMJ, 1941). The original paper will also be presented by Dr Mike Almond.
All clinicians, patients and researchers with an interest in AKI care are are welcome and we hope the programme will interest you. This event is free but email registration is required as numbers are limited.
